History of the Gold Star

The Gold Star was  introduced in America during World War I. Families with members serving in the war hanged a banner at their door or window with blue stars indicating the number of family members away serving in the military. If that family member died in combat they would change the blue star to a gold star.

In 1928, 25 Mothers of dead service members, led by Grace Darling Seibold, channeled their grief to incorporate as Gold star Mothers Inc.

Together, they Healed, supported and Honored the lives of their sons.

The organization grew into Gold Star Family Day and is observed on the last Sunday in September.
