Throughout much of American history, racial segregation was not confined to the realms of education and public facilities; even in death, African Americans faced discrimination.At death, African Americans were assigned segregated burial sites; these burial sites were located in rejected lands. They buried their dead under overgrown trees and under bushes.
These cemeteries became not just final resting places, but also important communal spaces where relationships, cultural traditions, history, and identity was preserved.
Restoring Honor
